“How was it?” tanong ko matapos muling maglakad papasok sa hallway.
I followed Mayu to her lab as she continued checking the data she had gathered. She had been studying it for months and she would ask for me when they needed to see or monitor something inside.
“Hmm . . . looks like we are right,” she muttered. She sat behind her desk and a holographic video of me appeared in front of her.
Lumapit ako sa kanya. “What did you find out?”
“The effects of that dimension aren’t as detrimental as it should be,” she continued. “Maybe because there was an external force or power that changed the matter interactions which then altered the spacetime continuum and its properties.”
She explained something about quantum fluctuations but I didn’t bother listening.
I went back to my cabin to rest and instinctively sidestepped as I opened the door. The silent and vacant space came into my view. Napabuntong-hininga na lang ako. It had been a month since that guy left yet I still couldn’t get used to his absence.
It was hard to adjust especially since Mayu and I had been together for years. It turned out this place would also have a lingering presence.
I summoned the dagger that was originally his because he stole mine.
“I shouldn’t have given away my dagger,” I muttered. “That was my favorite. Damn it.”
I gripped the dagger and carefully went to the door.
Ah. That voice.
She flashed a grin and I knitted my brows when I realized she was in her training gears.
“Kohaku’s gonna take care of Vivien today,” she said. “Wanna train?”
I smirked in return. “Guess we’re back to being training partners, huh?”
Akira almost got me after I taunted her. She was clearly not as agile as before but her power improved.
We were covered in scratches and dirt but I still managed a smile while catching my breath.
I missed this.
Sir Eichii said I passed the preliminary training and seminars and I could start next academic year, which would be five months from now.
“Mukha namang bagay sa’yong magturo,” she remarked.
“Hindi talaga,” I retorted.
The words hang heavily in the air and Akira gave a melancholic smile while looking at the clear sky.
“Yeah,” she said. “Naomi would be a good professor.”
“Mm,” I added. “Her students would probably be scared of her imposing aura.”
She chuckled. “Right? Kahit ako, matatakot kapag nag-sit in sa class niya.”
There were a few seconds of silence after that and we both sighed. Kumusta na kaya si Naomi? Kumusta na si Rainie? I hope they are doing fine.
I teased her about her cooking but she said she was already improving.
“Talaga ba?
She scoffed. “Excuse me? Araw-araw na kaya akong nagpa-practice.”
“Wait, don’t tell me, iyon ang pinapakain mo kay Kohaku?”
“Oo,” she shyly replied. “Mukha namang nasasarapan siya.”
“More like napipilitan,” I retorted. “Siya ang nag-a-adjust ng timpla. ‘no?”
We continued talking and teasing each other for the whole night and it felt nice. It felt like we were back to the times when everything was still nice and simple. I hope this kind of peace would last a lifetime.
That went on for a few months.
It was a nerve-wracking day. I thought I would pass out but the three of them were surprisingly encouraging me.
“Just act natural,” Mayu advised. “You’re going to be a great instructor.”
“Don’t swear,” Hideo said. “Don’t lose your temper.”
There weren’t a lot of transferees this time. Maybe because of what had happened before. Some might be hesitant to send their children here, knowing that a war just broke out several months ago.
I was assigned to the Basic Psychomotor Learning class. Basically, I would be teaching them motor skills—coordination, speed and dexterity—which would be the foundation of handling weapons and fighting.
They also showed their sixth sense and some would probably complement their fighting styles.
It was a stressful morning but I gradually calmed down when the students seemed to be interested in the subject since this would be the only class in their semester where they could move around and get physical.
I’d rather be physically tired than mentally exhausted.
‘You were good.’
I looked at my right and saw him leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. He strode toward my direction and walked with me.
“Were you nervous?” tanong niya.
“Malamang,” sagot ko naman. “Mukha siguro akong ewan kanina.”
“A bit,” he commented.
I kicked his calf in return but he didn’t even budge.
Akira and Mayu’s figures came into our view as we walked toward Mitsuo’s grave. Two years ago, we met him and Akemi.
Akira let out a dejected sigh. “Sana nandito rin si Naomi.”
The mention of her name immediately made the atmosphere heavier. Just like Hideo, she had sacrificed a lot, and what was more saddening was that she’s alone right now. She had to stay strong for the sake of Akemi and Hideo’s daughter. She had to carry the pain and burden alone.
Thinking about how hard it must be for her made me tear up. I wish I could help her even just a little. I wish I could support her even from afar.
Akira burst into tears and Mayu got teary-eyed as we reminisced those happy memories. It was hard to hold back the threatening tears but I managed to stay composed for their sake. I comforted them as much as I could and tried to lighten the mood.
Hideo placed a bouquet of green flowers on her grave and silent tears streamed down his face. We stayed by his side and quietly consoled him.
“You’re still having nightmares?” tanong ni Mayu.
He nodded and a faint smile escaped his lips. “It’s okay.”
“Hideo . . .”
“That’s the only time I could see them again,” he murmured.
Occasionally, I would also dream about them. Sometimes, it got so bad that I ended up crying and catching for my breath for two hours, or I had to hurt myself to wake up . . . to remind myself that it was just a dream. Meanwhile, Hideo had been having nightmares since the day Akemi died. Technically, three days after, because he hadn’t slept at all when that happened. It had been nine months, yet those nightmares didn’t stop.
After an hour, Mayu and Akira returned to the campus while Hideo stayed at her grave.
I was about to open the door when I felt something strange. I summoned my dagger and carefully opened the door.
Nobody was there but there was something on my bed. I hastily walked toward it and saw a strange weapon, as well as a note.
You suck at long-range combat. Maybe you can improve with this chakram.
I scoffed upon reading the message on the paper. The tone already gave away who the sender was. Ang kapal talaga ng mukha.
I held the split chakram and inspected it. To be honest, I wasn’t well versed in long-range weapons because I don’t like fighting in that style. Still, him pointing it out was irritating.
But I didn’t expect him to do something like this. I guess he really didn’t want to be indebted to me, so he had to return the favor.
The next few months and years passed by quietly. Everything was peaceful except for the kids that I had to babysit whenever their parents weren’t around. That guy also sent a couple of new weapons with his ever annoying and conceited notes every year.
I thought the peace would last for a long time, but I was wrong. The pleasant time was short-lived.
Five years after the tragedy, another wave of devastation plowed through us, but this time, I crumbled and wished death was the better option.
“We’ll continue this tomorrow,” Sir Eichii announced after an hour of lecture and demonstration. “And please, child, control your temper.”
Hideo was serious about that and I wanted to smack his head for suggesting this absurd idea.
I just shoved it in my bag and marched to the village. The familiar bungalow came into my view.
I realized it had been more than two months since I last went home. Akira was right. I should have had this cleaned before I came back.
Man, this place looked like it had been abandoned for more than a year already.
A wistful smile escaped my lips. It was the only group photo we had taken.
Agad ko iyong kinuha at tinitigan. Despite their stoic expressions, I could tell that they were happy. It had been more than two months but everything that happened was still vivid.
Maybe it was a punishment for not being able to save them from their demise.
I volunteered to enter that portion of the Black Dimension in the hallway and today would be the first trial of navigating it.
I smiled at her. “So, anong kailangan kong gawin?”
She explained to me the process and somehow, I find it thrilling. I wasn’t given any missions outside the campus (Hideo’s fault) so this would be the first after the war.
May pinasuot siya sa aking protective gear, though I doubt it could protect a Senshin from the detrimental effects of the Black Dimension.
“Wait, I’ll tie this to you,” dagdag niya.
She tied a rope around my waist so that they could pull me out when something bad happen.
I could feel the tension rising in the air. Mayu stood beside me and checked everything for the last time.
“Michiko, I’m gonna tell you again, if you feel something, just pull the rope and I’ll—”
“Alright, alright,” I said, cutting her off.
She breathed deeply and signaled the staffs and researchers with us. Some of the devices started displaying numbers and figures I couldn’t understand while the other showed holographic images of me, the hallway and the building.
I stepped forward and turned the doorknob.
‘I hope I won’t come back dead,’ I chuckled. ‘You won’t,’ she replied. ‘I’m here.’
Upon hearing that, I stepped into the darkness.
I thought I would die.
A chill went down my spine and this place felt too cold. The echo of my footsteps made my skin crawl. My senses felt numb.
Mayu was right. This portion of the Black Dimension had turned dormant. If this were the normal one, I’d be kissing the ground by now. It still felt eerie but the effects seemed to be decreased by tenfold. It felt like someone would attack me every time I stepped forward.
It was getting harder to breathe but I kept on walking. This place seemed to have no concept of distance.
My hands were getting numb, too, so I decided to pull the rope. I let it pull me along.
“Oh, thank the gods,” she muttered as she sighed in relief.
My brows knitted. “Bakit?”
“You were gone for three hours.”
I didn’t know that the suit was equipped with a tracker. They tried tugging the rope, too, but I wasn’t responding. I also thought I was there for just a few minutes.
It looked like both distance and time had been warped for some reason.
Matapos iyon ay dumiretso ako sa cabin. I deflected the dagger he just threw when I opened the door. This freaking bastard.
“I can—” he paused and his expression hardened. “How are you alive?”
“What do you mean?”
“You . . . I could sense the Black Dimension’s essence in you.”
“Ah, that . . .”
I tried explaining it to him without giving away any crucial information. Hindi ko naman mabasa ang mukha niya. He seemed lost in thoughts.
He could walk already? Damn, this guy’s toughness shouldn’t be underestimated.
He halted right in front of me. “You can now bring me to her.”
For the first time, he looked earnest. There were a few seconds of silence between us but he held his gaze.
“Fine,” I muttered. You just need to follow me quietly.”
His expression immediately returned to its usual smug appearance. I thought he’d complain but he managed to restrain himself.
Nag-prepare naman ako para ro’n. I told him we’d go there at midnight para less ang risk. Once his presence got detected, I’m sure this place would turn into chaos again.
I fiddled with my knife as I planned our route. Besides, no one in their sane minds would walk through that area at midnight.
Well, I guess we’re crazy enough to do exactly that.
I opted for an all-black attire while he wore his cloak.
It was hard to navigate at night. We couldn’t even use a flashlight because it might alert the beasts. He was good at concealing it.
‘Could you just look straight ahead?’ reklamo niya at pinigilan ko ang sarili kong lumingon.
I scoffed. ‘I’m worried. Baka bigla mo na lang akong saksakin.’
He snickered in return. ‘Don’t worry, I won’t do that yet.’
Several minutes had already passed when we encountered the first beast. It was the sabretooth tigers. The wound on my leg stung as if it remembered the beast that gave it to me.
He groaned as he forced himself to move faster. I told him not to use the Black Dimension because that would mean trouble so he had no choice but to tread through the forest.
‘What the hell are those?’ tanong niya. ‘Genetically modified animals,’ I replied. ‘We simply call them beasts.’
Our history professors said the earlier Councils made an order to create predators that could protect our place and sanctuary. The scientists and researches conducted experiments on these apex predators that once dominated these vast forest. However, they didn’t expect the progression of their strength and power.
According to the written records, more than 200 Senshins died, most of them from the research and development division, after dealing with those predators. The Council wanted to annihilate them but most of the departments disagreed.
They seemed to have a progress in intellect, too, kaya naman kung hindi sila gagalawin ay hindi rin sila susugod. The transgenes had been passed on to their children and now that part of the forest is inhabited by those beasts.
The sabretooths started growling and they might have detected our presence. We carefully climbed onto the trees and positioned ourselves on their blind spots.
‘Don’t get scared, weakling,’ I taunted. ‘They can sense fear.’ ‘Weakling?’ he snapped.
They were circling the tree right next to us.
‘You sure you’re not the one who’s scared?’ he retorted while looking at the beasts below us. ‘Ha! Ako, takot? As if,’ balik ko sa kanya.
We managed to jumped from one tree to another without the sabretooths following our movement. However, I slipped when I jumped onto another one because he was in the way.
He knelt on the bough I was holding onto and smirked at me.
‘Who’s the weakling now?’
I glared at him as I tried to pull myself up. ‘Ikaw pa rin.’
Nakaakyat naman ako sa kung nasaan siya. I suddenly had the urge to push him so the beasts could teach him a lesson or two.
We halted at the last huge tree and I pointed at the vast grassland in front of us.
Tumalon kami pababa at naglakad patungo sa dulo nito. The wind was cold and harsh but it didn’t stop him from walking hurriedly.
“Rielle . . .”
I distanced myself to give him the space he needed. I don’t know what happened to them before she escaped but it looked like he was feeling the guilt, too.
Ah . . . those injuries . . . maybe he got those while trying to protect her. He said that was his job as her Elite. But just like Hideo, I knew his feelings for her might be more than that.
Napatingin na lang ako sa langit. It was clear and the sky was covered with thousands of stars. I remembered how Akemi and Mitsuo died facing the sky. Until the end, they held their heads high. They were warriors.
“This place does not have a barrier, right?”
Then there it was, a crack appeared on the air. The next thing I knew, he had already opened the Black Dimension.
“Your wish would finally come true,” he said while stepping inside. “I’ll be leaving.”
Somehow, it felt weird.
I sighed and smiled. “Finally.”
The Black Dimension gradually closed and the last thing I saw was him glaring at me. I just stood there for a few seconds but my body tensed when my instinct told me I was in danger.
I drew the dagger on my waist and quickly turned around while slashing it in a full arc. However, I didn’t expect to see him there . . . and his hand was bleeding because he used it to stop my dagger’s momentum.
“What the he—why did you use your hand?!”
He just casually snatched the dagger from my hand and threw his on my direction.
“This one’s sharper,” he muttered while inspecting my dagger with his bloody hand. “I forgot to tell you that I’m going to return the favor.”
“Oh, is that so?” I teased. “I don’t think you can.
I thought he’d attack me but he just heaved a sigh. He was about to leave for real but I called his attention before the Black Dimension closes.
“What’s your name?” tanong ko.
He stared at me for several seconds before answering. “Kid.”
Kid? Hah. What a weird and funny name. Hindi bagay sa kanya.
“You?” he returned.
“Michiko,” sagot ko naman.
He grimaced. “Awful name.”
Before I could react, the Black Dimension had already closed and I was left dumbfounded. Bastos talaga ang bibig ng isang ‘yon. I hope I won’t see that freaking Shinigami again!
And as if the heavens heard my words, that was the last time I saw him in years.
They greeted me with smiles on their faces.
It had been two months, too, since Akemi and Mitsuo died.
Michiko sat right across us while Hideo was sitting behind his desk.
“Are you sure you’re okay staying in that cabin?” tanong ni Mayu habang nakatingin sa hologram sa harapan niya. She was busy with the modifications of some of the devices they were building.
I forced a laugh.
Mayu chuckled at my remark while her eyes were still focused on the hologram. Hideo cleared his throat and we all looked at him.
Stop making me their babysitters!”
Akira laughed at me.
I rolled my eyes at her and groaned. “No thanks. Pagod na ako sa inyo pa lang.”
Our meeting started after that but my mind was elsewhere. I hope he wasn’t “training” again because his wounds wouldn’t heal if he couldn’t even stay still.
Napatingin naman ako kay Akira. She looked a lot better now. That one-month rest really helped her recover. I didn’t want to see her devastated anymore.
Meanwhile, Mayu was doing well. She was finally appointed as the head of the Technology Department three weeks ago. Her first project was to study the hallway that somehow became a “dormant” state of Black Dimension, though she wasn’t sure if it was, indeed, dormant.
“What’s the status of that?” tanong ni Hideo.
“I’m still not sure about the long-term effects, if there are any, but it seems like the current dormancy was a result of . . . someone’s power. We can’t risk any of the researchers to enter it completely. Baka kasi biglang ma-trigger at maging active ulit. We can test it but Sir Kyo—”
Napatigil si Mayu. The atmosphere abruptly went down upon hearing his name.
Two weeks ago, napag-alaman namin na wala na sa campus sina Sir Kyo at Sir Tora. According to Hideo, there was a council meeting involving all the administrative divisions that day. He didn’t tell us what had transpired but based on the things he said, it seemed like Sir Kyo and Sir Tora shouldered all the blame so that Sir Hideyoshi could still have the power over the council.
Sir Kyo said he could have done better. He could have saved both Akemi and Mitsuo. Ganoon din si Sir Tora. He said he felt weak and powerless after a student, Mitsuo, died in front of him. Hindi namin alam kung nasaan na sila. Tanging si Sir Hideyoshi lang ang makapagsasabi.
For sure, pinag-usapan si Rainie.
I let out a sigh. Akemi only had the chance to name her after barely escaping from their base. She was supposed to be the source of happiness of Akemi and Hideo, yet she had become the catalyst of everything.
I’m sure Hideo misses her. He wanted to be with her but he couldn’t. . . for now.
“I could be the test subject,” Hideo said, breaking the silence.
“No,” sabay-sabay naming sagot kaya nagkatinginan kami.
“No, Hideo,” Mayu replied. “You can’t.”
“Ako na lang,” sabi ko. “I want to participate in that project. Besides, maybe that could make me stronger.”
“But it’s dangerous, Michiko,” Mayu warned.
I gave her a smile. “Oh, you know I love danger.”
I went back to the forest after that meeting. I was still annoyed at Hideo after telling me the mission he wanted me to do.
“The Weapons division of the Technology department recommended you as an instructor for classes involving fighting and weapons. You need to train as a teacher. That’s your mission.”
I thought he was joking at first but he didn’t budge.
“Seryoso ka ba?! Me? An instructor?” I asked while pointing at myself.
He nodded. “You’re one of the best fighters here. With you as the teacher, students will surely improve.”
“I can’t teach!” I retorted. “No, I don’t want to teach!”
“Hindi bagay!” Akira chimed in.
“May I seat in in one of your classes, Ma’am?” teased Mayu. “Ah.
“I won’t be a teacher!”
Upon turning the doorknob, I immediately sensed danger. I summoned a dagger on my left hand and forced the door open with my left. Another dagger clashed against mine and it fell to the ground with a clang.
“I can throw things now,” he announced as he slowly rotated his right wrist.
It landed just inches away from his leg.
He could move better now compared before but he still couldn’t walk properly. The nerves on his hands seemed to be damaged, too. But it looked like he could still fight, given that he just threw that dagger at me with all his might.
He was a smart mouth, all right, pero hindi ako papatalo pagdating sa asaran at kawalanghiyaan.
“Still no,” I said and he glared in return. I don’t want to get caught hiding and aiding an enemy.”
He cursed under his breath and gripped his dagger but he didn’t say anything anymore. Nakakainis talaga! Why did they even recommend me?!
Wait, did he grip the blade a while ago and not the hilt?!
“Gusto mo talagang nasasaktan, ano?” I remarked while looking at his bleeding hand.
He scoffed. “This is nothing.”
“Sabagay, muntik ka na ngang mamatay,” I retorted.
“That, too, was nothing.”
. . o baka totoo ang sinasabi niya. What would be worse than the wounds he received that day?
I started dressing the wound on his palm as silence permeated the air.
“Have you been imprisoned?” he asked.
Agad ko naman siyang tiningnan. “Hindi ako masamang tao.”
He raised his eyebrow. “Are you sure?”
I tightened the bandage while wrapping his hand and he winced.
He remained silent after that but his eyes looked . . . sad.
“I can’t wait to see her,” he muttered.
Despite being disrespectful and annoying, it seemed like he really wanted to get better so that he could see Akemi.
He had been religiously visiting her every day because he said he couldn’t be there when we sent her off. He would only smile when he’s there. He would only relax when he’s with her.
Muli akong napabuntong-hininga matapos kong bendahan ang kamay niya.
“I hope you can walk soon,” I murmured. He looked at me with a confused expression and I smiled in return. “So that you can see her and you can leave this place.”
“Don’t worry, I can’t wait to leave this place, too,” sagot naman niya.
He stared daggers at me. “Once I recover, you’d be my first casualty.”
I smirked at him. “Oh? Just so you know, I’m stronger than you.”
I hope I could do it right.
“I am the stronger one,” he retaliated but I just shrugged my shoulders.
“Oh, wow, I’m scared,” I flatly commented.
“I’m going to kill you one of these days,” he murmured.
Pinigilan ko naman ang tawa ko. Wow. Shinigamis got a short fuse. Maybe I could use that to my advantage when I encountered one during missions.
But, kill me, huh?
Sorry, but I couldn’t afford to get killed. As long as my friends need me as their support, I’d try my best to stay alive. I still have a lot of people to protect.
Dying was still not in my options. And I hope there wouldn’t be a time where it would be one.
I felt good after feeding him. I think his tongue even got burnt. Feeling ko tuloy, nakaganti ako sa Shinigamis, even just for a little.
He fell asleep right after. I had to clean and dress his wounds again because they started bleeding when he moved a while ago.
I didn’t want to be with an enemy for so long, lalo na matapos ang lahat ng nangyari.
I stared at him and remembered how this was supposed to be Akemi’s house if we managed to save her. I immediately pushed that thought at the corner of my mind. Tumayo ako at lumabas sa cabin.
That was right. I was still weak. I needed to train more.
I went to Green’s Bane and waited for the beasts to find me. A minute later, a tiger the size of a bear fixed its gaze on me. It was a sabretooth and based on its pattern and coloration, this must be one of the three that survived the enhancement. Damn, I got myself a tough one.
It was fast and agile and if I was just a second late, my foot would have been torn apart by its teeth and powerful jaws.
It bared its fangs at me as it let out a majestic growl. Suddenly, it felt like facing that rude Shinigami. Agad naman akong napangiti. This could be a good image training. I’d give you hell.
Well, it turned out the beast had adapted well to high-level battles.
I was careless earlier and its claws dug into my thigh. Fortunately, I managed to wound its chest and eyes, and I used that to escape. But I was surprised when I saw two more tigers in the vicinity. And those were sabretooths, too.
I had been fighting against the tiger for hours but I only landed two clean cuts. With my current condition, I don’t think I could face all three.
“Shit,” I cursed under my breath as the tigers lingered below the tree where I was.
I didn’t want to risk escaping by jumping on trees because it was already dark. There might be more predators who were active at night.
Oh, well. Might as well rest here.
‘Kill to protect. That’s the only way.’
Mitsuo’s face came into my view, but something was strange. He looked . . . murderous. All of them were either headless or killed brutally.
He looked at my direction, blood splattered on his face, and smiled at me.
‘Michiko, protect them for me.’
But a spear suddenly pierced his chest and his blood splashed all over me.
Panic rose to my throat as I saw the blood on my hands. I started to sob and tried to calm myself, reassuring everything was alright. It took me minutes before I realized it was a dream and I was still on the limb of a tree.
I drew a shaky breath as I leaned against the tree. The nightmares were getting worse. Now, I’m scared to sleep, too.
Ilang minuto pa ang lumipas bago ako tuluyang kumalma. Napatitig ako sa mga kamay ko. They were bloody because of my wound. Seeing them the moment I opened my eyes made the dream look real.
My gaze shifted to the surroundings. I stifled a scream as I landed on my injured leg. Despite the pain, I ran from the Green’s Bane.
Initially, I wanted to return to the cabin but I didn’t want that guy to see me in a pathetic state. My pride wouldn’t allow that. In the end, I decided to go to Akemi since that was the safest place in the forest for now.
I was already half-dragging my right leg when I saw the grassland. It was Hideo.
He was sitting in front of her grave while Demi was on his lap.
My heart sank upon seeing him with her in this kind of situation. They deserved better than this.
That was the smile he would only give to Akemi.
‘What are you doing there?’
I flinched upon hearing his voice in my head. I sat beside him and Demi walked toward me.
Hideo stared at my wound.
“Michiko,” he carefully called. “Could you—”
“It’s just a scratch,” I chuckled. “Wala lang ‘yan.”
“I told you to be careful.”
“Come on, it’s just the usual training injuries,” I retorted. “Anyway, napuntahan mo na ba si Akira?”
Fortunately, he let it go as soon as the topic shifted to Akira.
“Yuuki recommended a month of rest,” he stated. “I think she’d be assigned in training or patrol duties instead of missions in the outside world.”
“Besides, she has a family. It’s better for her to stay here.”
Demi returned to Hideo and I thought that was my cue to exit. He needed some time alone with Akemi.
I immediately went to the bathroom and cleaned myself. I had to keep myself from screaming as water ran through the deep wound.
“Ah. You’re awake.”
He didn’t respond but he continued staring at my wound. Pakiramdam ko, jina-judge na niya ako. I suddenly felt like I was a weakling.
I started cleaning it and I had to bite my lower lip to suppress a yelp. Damn those tigers.
After sterilizing the needle and thread, I sutured the wound and placed a thin layer of ointment.
‘Are you a doctor?’
I turned around and met his gaze.
“No,” sagot ko. ‘I see,’ he said. ‘That’s why everything is sloppy.’
My eyes narrowed at his retort.
“You’ll either get killed or get experimented.”
He scoffed. ‘Like what the doctors did to Rielle?’
I immediately summoned a dagger and pointed it at his neck.
“Dr. Miwako saved Akemi,” I emphasized. “If you want to blame someone, then it should be the Council, not her. Besides, what your tribe did was worse.”
Her left eye was missing and she was bleeding badly. She wanted to get back to her family but what did they do to her? They must have studied and experimented on her.
He let out a dry laugh. ‘I agree. In the end, both tribes treated her like a guinea pig.’
Tears were threatening to come out so I had to withdraw my dagger. Tumalikod ako at dali-daling naglatag sa sahig. I lay down and faced the opposite direction.
I wanted to sleep comfortably after spending the night in the forest, but I was afraid to dream about Akemi and Mitsuo again. Thoughts lingered inside my head. There were a lot of what ifs and most were about them being alive.
Napabuntong-hininga na lang ako. I thought I’d get used to their absence. Nawala rin naman sila nang matagal noon. But unlike before, they wouldn’t come back anymore.
I missed them. I missed them so bad.
My life revolved around the cabin and campus for the next two weeks. I had to feed that guy everyday but thank goodness he could finally move his hands after a week.
Mayu was getting busier because of the takeover. She was preparing for being the head of the Technology department so sometimes, she would ask me to babysit Hiroshi. Tulad na lang ngayon.
Nasa bahay ako ngayon ni Mayu. Hiroshi was with Reina and Hayate kaya mas sumakit ang ulo ko. Ugh. Ang daming bata.
“Bakit ka nakasimangot d’yan,” Akira chuckled.
I sighed in defeat. “Kids are harder to deal with than enemies.”
Natawa naman siya at agad akong napangiti. Buti at umaayos na ang pakiramdam niya. She seemed lively again but sometimes, she would just stare vacantly at space. She looked better when she’s with the kids kaya naman madalas ay siya ang nagbabantay sa kanila.
He gave me a smirk the moment he saw me.
I would just help him eat and then I would go out. Babalik lang ako kapag matutulog na ako.
“You can move now?” I murmured.
“Just my upper body,” he said in a hoarse voice.
Napatingin naman siya sa braso ko. It was bleeding because Hiroshi threw the device he was tinkering a while ago when Reina and Hayate kept on teasing him. Even when not in training, I still get injured.
“Few more days . . .” he muttered.
I turned to his direction and saw him with a wistful expression on his face.
Right. I promised him to show where Akemi was. After that, he would leave. I guess that would be for the best. Hideo also said I could get missions in two weeks.
We quietly ate as thoughts lingered in my head.
It’s been days. I even thought he was already braindead.
Dahan-dahan akong lumapit sa kanya. He still looked deathly pale and sick.
“W-why . . .” he asked with difficulty, “can’t I . . . m-move my body . . .”
Tumayo ako sa gilid niya. His breathing was ragged and it seemed like his condition was still critical, but at least, he was alive and awake.
“Your body was way beyond its limit,” sabi ko at muling napatingin sa hiwa sa dibdib niya.
He drew a shaky breath and he winced upon doing that. Even breathing must be painful for him. He must be running in adrenaline when he ambushed me here that time. Now, his body had given up on him.
‘Was it a dream?’
My heart sank when I heard his thoughts. I remembered Hideo saying he didn’t want to wake up if he dreamt about her. About them.
“It wasn’t,” I murmured, trying hard not to cry.
He turned to my direction with difficulty. “R-Ri . . . Rielle . . .”
“Gusto mo ba siyang makita?” tanong ko at marahan siyang tumango. “Then get well. Once you can move again, I’ll bring you to her. Pwede ka na ring umalis pagkatapos.”
He looked at me with a pensive expression but I averted his gaze. I still hate the rest of the Shinigamis for what they did to her. This guy, his eyes were the same—cold and ruthless—but they softened every time he called her name. I felt that hatred boiling inside me whenever I looked at him but I also remembered Akemi at the same time.
This guy was her Elite. Her friend, even though I know they don’t use that term. At least, I wanted to be a little nice to him because he helped her escape.
‘We’re enemies,’ he suddenly said. ‘You don’t have to act nice. I hate you, too, for what you did to her.’
‘My enemies are those who made her suffer,’ I replied. ‘You helped her. You’re her friend.’
He scoffed. ‘Friend? What bullshit is that?’ ‘Ah, right. You don’t use terms like that.’
He glared at me, which was kind of scary. ‘I am her Elite. Her subordinate. I just did what I had to do.’
But you still failed, I wanted to say but I held back. We all failed in saving her.
‘But she was labeled as a traitor by your tribe,’ I retorted. Yet you still risk everything for her sake.’ I smiled at him. ‘That loyalty is not just of a subordinate, but as a friend, or maybe even deeper than that.’
‘Piss off, Senshin. You don’t fucking know anything.’
Napanganga na lang ako sa narinig ko. Man, I already know Shinigamis have foul mouths. Kahit si Akemi, walang galang magsalita madalas but this guy takes the cake.
I smirked at his direction and he glowered at me.
‘Ah. ‘I said fuck off.’ I taunted. ‘Ah. Hindi ka nga pala makagalaw.’ ‘You f—’
Agad akong tumayo at naglakad papunta sa kusina. ‘Yeah, yeah. Dahil mabait ako, ipagluluto kita.’
I snickered as I walked away from him. I didn’t know there were Shinigamis who were kind of funny.
It had been a while since I last laughed.
I cooked porridge since that was the easiest food to make. She did teach us how but we were so bad at it.
“Ano ka ba, Michiko, kailangan nating matuto,” Akira said.
“Ikaw ‘yon,” she retorted.
Naomi knitted her eyebrows. “I’m not.”
“Excuse me, ikaw kaya ang pinakamapili.”
“She’s right, Naomi,” dagdag ko.
“Ako?”
Muli akong napangiti nang maalala ko ‘yon. I was glad we tried our best to learn from her.
Akira even said she wanted to cook food for her family before.
Pwede niya bang kainin ‘to? Well, halos isang linggo na siyang ‘di kumakain. How come he was still alive?
‘Could you shut up?’ he growled. ‘What an ugly laugh.’
‘Wow. Gwapo? Ugly ka rin.’
He gave me a dirty look and his eyebrows almost became one. Asar-talo pala. Feeling ko tuloy kaharap ko sina Hideo at Mitsuo . . .
Napabuntong-hininga ako nang maalala ko si Mitsuo. I remembered teasing him almost every day. He was too cautious whenever she was around.
But he became much calmer when Nathan came. He said he wanted to know what a father was and how he could be a good one to his son.
“Protect, huh?” he muttered while we were searching for books in the shop.
“Yup. First, protect him. I mean, I think that’s what a parent does first. Then, take care of them?”
“How?” sabay tingin niya sa akin. “I can only kill for them. Will that count as protection?”
Natawa naman ako sa sinabi niya. “Siguro? ‘Yon lang din ang alam ko.”
“Family is such a complicated thing.”
“I know, right?”
Muli siyang tumingin sa akin nang seryoso. “Ikaw ba? Ayaw mong magpamilya?”
I shook my head.
The Shinigami’s stomach rumbled again and that jarred me back to the present.
I carefully let his upper body rest against the headboard.
‘What the hell are you doing?’ pagalit niyang tanong.
Sinamaan ko naman siya ng tingin. ‘Just shut up and eat.
Before he could say anything, I put a spoonful of porridge in his mouth.
Now I have another person to take care of. What a life.
